One twin may possess fewer DNA methylation marks, thereby making him more susceptible to contracting lupus, whereas the other twin has more marks and is healthy, free of the disease. Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks its own cells and for which there is currently no cure. This new study involving twins, however, may help researchers to narrow down the causes of the disease and consequently create better treatment options.
